An Edmonton police officer has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault.
The charges were laid by Alberta’s police watchdog, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
ASIRT was tasked with investigating the allegations involving the off-duty Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer and alleged events from March 10, 2024.
In a news release Thursday, the watchdog said that investigation “yielded reasonable grounds to believe an offence had been committed.” The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service reviewed the evidence.
On Wednesday, Const. Alec Chomik was arrested and charged. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 7. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
EPS tells CityNews Chomik was on active duty while the ASIRT investigation was ongoing. Once criminal charges were laid, he was “immediately relieved of duty without pay,” a spokesperson said.
