A significant rainfall event is expected to soak Edmonton through the weekend, with forecasters warning that total rainfall amounts could reach between 50 and 100 millimetres by the time the system moves out Sunday night.
Periods of rain began Saturday morning and are expected to continue throughout the day, bringing 15 to 25 mm of rainfall along with the risk of thunderstorms. Easterly winds of 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, will accompany the wet weather as temperatures struggle to reach a high of 14 C.
The heaviest rainfall is expected Saturday night, when an additional 40 to 50 mm could fall. Rain is forecast to be heavy at times, with isolated thunderstorms capable of producing even higher localized amounts. Winds will shift from the east to the north overnight, with temperatures dipping to around 10 C.
The wet conditions are expected to persist into Sunday, with another 20 to 30 mm of rain possible and a continued risk of thunderstorms during the afternoon. Sunday’s high is expected to reach just 12 C, well below seasonal averages.
Environment officials warn that water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Some property damage is possible, particularly in locations prone to poor drainage. Motorists are being urged not to drive through flooded roadways and to watch for potential washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
The storm system is expected to gradually weaken Sunday night, although rain is still forecast before tapering off.
Conditions will improve to start the workweek. Monday is expected to be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a high of 19 C before skies clear overnight.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the weekend.
