Super-heavy, slow-moving load travelling from Edmonton to Fort Saskatchewan

Drivers in the Edmonton area are being warned about a slow-moving load starting Wednesday night.

The load – a de-ethanizer – is moving from Edmonton to Fort Saskatchewan. De-ethanizer is used in natural gas processing to separate ethane from heavier hydrocarbons.

The entire module is nearly 100 metres long and 7.7 metres wide, weighing about 750 tonnes.

“Due to its large size and weight, this load will travel at a maximum speed of 30 km/h. The load will move with guide vehicles, below posted speed limits, using the entire width of the highway including shoulder,” the province warned in a news release.

The load will leave Dacro Industries in Edmonton at 11 p.m. and take Highway 216 then Highway 14. It will stop on the east side of Highway 21 at 5 a.m., where it will remain all of Thursday.

On Friday at 2 a.m., the load will begin moving again: east on Highway 14, north on Highway 834, west on Highway 15, and finally north on Range Road 220 to arrive at DOW Chemical in Fort Saskatchewan.
