Driver charged after allegedly going double the speed limit while impaired west of Edmonton

Alberta RCMP say there’s one fewer driver temporarily after someone was found to be driving recklessly in Stony Plain.
Mounties who were on patrol around 2:13 a.m. on June 7 reportedly noticed an older Ford truck allegedly fail to stop for a red light while making a right turn at the intersection of 44 Avenue and Southpark Drive, before driving at high speed.
It is believed that the truck was being driven at 120 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Around that time, an event was being held, which meant the area had increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as well as patrons leaving local establishments in the area.
Police were able to take the driver into custody after the truck stopped at the intersection of 48 Street and 49 Avenue.
Following this, officers were able to learn that the driver was allegedly impaired and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension.
The driver was then issued a violation ticket for careless driving, a 24-hour immediate roadside suspension due to impairment, and a summons for driving while unauthorized. Additionally, the truck was also seized for 30 days under Alberta’s Suspended Driver Program.
“Driving impaired and at excessive speeds is a serious danger to everyone on the road,” said Inspector McGillivray of the Parkland RCMP. “This type of reckless behaviour puts motorists and pedestrians at risk, and the outcome could have been far more serious.”
