Alberta RCMP says road crews are still working to clear vehicles that were caught in the heavy snowfall over the past few days.
Mounties originally advised that drivers should avoid travelling on Highway 63 and Highway 881 on Friday, April 24, noting those roads had been blocked.
The advisory came as numerous collisions had been reported due to poor weather and poor road conditions.
“While Alberta RCMP may recommend against travel or temporarily restrict access, they do not maintain or clear highways, nor have the authority to close them. Travel advisories issued by police are not issued lightly and are based on real-time safety risks. The public is strongly encouraged to follow them to reduce danger and avoid delays in emergency response,” said the RCMP in a statement.
“In these situations, Alberta RCMP is primarily focused on public safety, emergencies and partnering with support agencies. This includes responding to collisions, emergencies and issuing travel advisories or restrictions alongside 511 when conditions may pose a significant risk to the public.”

Over the weekend, one stranded motorist had to be assisted by Wood Buffalo RCMP in a medical emergency. Mounties also provided food and water to some motorists.
Mounties are reminding Albertans to plan ahead before hitting the highways by checking 511 Alberta. Additionally, they are advising to pack emergency preparedness kits, including extra water, food, and blankets, ensure your fuel tank is full upon departure, and tune into local radio stations for up-to-date weather reports during severe weather.
