Edmonton police say a man has been taken into custody after allegedly causing a disturbance outside an Edmonton Jewish school.
EPS says officers responded to Talmud Torah School around 8:30 a.m. on March 23, after receiving a report of a disturbance.
When officers arrived, they were able to find and take the man into custody under the Mental Health Act.
In a statement to CityNews, Edmonton Public Schools says that the man “appeared to be in mental distress and made derogatory and racist comments directed at the community in addition to other cultural groups,” before police were contacted.
“We take incidents like this very seriously and the school continues to be in contact and work closely with police and Division security. Letters have been sent home to families to let them know about the situation,” said Edmonton Public Schools in a statement.
EPS says its Hate Crimes Unit has been notified of the incident, and an investigation is underway.
