3 men charged with arson after Diwali fireworks allegedly lead to southeast Edmonton house fire: police

A house and a construction fire happened late Monday and early Tuesday, with one of them caused by a fireworks spark. Our Leo Cruzat reports.

Three men are facing arson charges after Edmonton police and firefighters say fireworks led to a two-storey house going up in flames in the city’s southeast on Monday night. A second home was also significantly damaged.

Heavy smoke and flames filled the sky in southeast Edmonton as seven fire trucks were called to the fire at 24 Avenue and 25 Street NW around 8:35 p.m. Everyone had evacuated and no one was injured.

“But this could have been much worse,” Edmonton police said in a news release.

“Fireworks were launched from a backyard, and sparks landed on a row of townhomes, setting them on fire.”

The blaze was under control by 9:07 p.m. and declared out by 9:58 p.m.

“It went up terrifyingly fast & could hear the fire crackling from 1 street over,” Brianne wrote on X. “Thanks to the quick response from our firefighters it looked to be relatively controlled (from a short distance away) moments after they arrived!!”

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says investigators determined the blaze was caused by sparks from fireworks.

“The fire started after fireworks ignited combustible materials on or near the building’s garage,” EFRS told CityNews in an emailed statement.

“We want to take this moment to remind Edmontonians that fireworks are 1) prohibited without an approved fireworks permit and 2) may only be discharged by certified professionals once an approved fireworks permit has been obtained. The individuals charged in last night’s fire recklessly caused damage to property due to not following these critical safety requirements.”

The men are accused of recklessly causing damage by fire or explosion.

“Our top priority is preventing anyone from being seriously injured, or worse, because of unsafe or careless behaviour,” Edmonton police wrote.

“No permit. No fireworks. Light up your home, not your neighbour’s roof.”
