Edmonton city council races to watch

Twelve city council seats are up for grabs in Edmonton.

Some wards are wide open, while incumbents could be in a close race for their job.

sipiwiyiniwak

Ward sipiwiyiniwak in Edmonton’s West End is an open race, with Sarah Hamilton not running again.

Thu Parmar is a former Community League president going up against six other candidates, including Better Edmonton’s Darrell Friesen, PACE’s Ken Ropcean, and independent Giselle General.

piheswin

Ward piheswin in the southwest is going to be a litmus test for Better Edmonton, with former Edmonton Police Association president Mike Elliott running in Tim Cartmell’s place. Also running is Jackie Liu and Rupesh Patel.

Nakota Isga

And Nakota Isga will also be a race to watch, with Andrew Knack running for mayor. One of his former staffers, Rajah Maggay, is looking to replace him, along with Reed Clarke, the former Sport Edmonton CEO for Better Edmonton.

But then there are the council races with an incumbent looking for another term.

Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi

Political scientist Chaldeans Mensah recommends keeping a close eye on Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi in the south, with multiple challengers trying to beat Jennifer Rice.

Rice has only served one term, but was mired in harassment and bullying allegations from staffers that’s still making its way through the court system. She has six people competing against her.

With counting expected to take a while, it appears those races will not be declared until Tuesday morning.
