An intense scene in West Edmonton on Thursday night, a video showing Edmonton police using a taser on a man twice.
Police say at approximately 11 p.m., officers were patrolling in the area of Yellowhead Trail and 215 Street when a Dodge Ram fled from police and quickly lost control and hit the ditch.
When the driver exited the truck, police say he ignored their directions, prompting them to deploy a CEW — commonly referred to as a taser.
A witness recorded the encounter. In the video, officers repeatedly tell the man to put his hands to the sides and roll over onto his face.
You then see police deploy the taser a second time. Many viewers on social media are calling it an unnecessary use of force.
In a statement to CityNews, Edmonton police say, “Officers are required to make a split-second assessment of the level of risk in each incident, and to use force that is proportionate to the situation. This critical decision-making includes an assessment of factors, including lighting conditions, the subject’s behaviour, mental state, presence of a weapon, or proximity to others who may be put at risk by the subject.”
EPS believes the truck was stolen and re-vinned. The driver has been charged with criminal flight, driving while suspended, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a device for purpose of committing theft. Additional charges are pending.
