Edmonton Public Schools promote Ron Thompson to superintendent

Edmonton Public Schools says their search for a new superintendent was nationwide, but ultimately, they found their man inside their office.

Ron Thompson was the assistant superintendent of schools. He was previously a teacher, assistant principal, and principal of three schools. He says his favourite subject in school is social studies.

“I am deeply honoured and excited to be named Superintendent of Schools for Edmonton Public Schools,” said Thompson in a statement. “Throughout my time with the Division, I’ve witnessed the unwavering commitment of staff and the incredible capabilities of students.

“Our strong community, including parents, volunteers, and partners, are all key parts to our collective success. I am eager to build upon this foundation, supporting student achievement and working to make sure students are well-prepared for their journey ahead.”

His workload is already expected to be heavy with a teachers’ strike looming and evolving budget constraints.

“We are actively working on contingency plans, and I must say I have the deepest respect and admiration for the work our teachers and all of our staff do in our classrooms,” said Thompson.

Julie Kusiek, Edmonton Public Schools Board Chair, said, “Ron is known as a caring and compassionate leader within our division, always putting students at the centre of his work, and that’s very important to us as the board of trustees.”

Thompson takes over September 1st for a retiring Darrel Robertson. School is still out for Edmonton public kids until September 2nd.
