A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for central and northern Alberta, covering multiple cities and towns, on Thursday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) watch stretches from Airdrie to Edmonton, and further north to Athabasca.

The thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon, and they may become severe with hail, strong wind gusts, and downpours.

Officials say any thunderstorms that do develop will move east or southwest through the evening and overnight hours.

The ECCC also warns that thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.
