By Michael Ranger

Two people are dead following a fiery head-on crash on a central Alberta highway on Canada Day.

Emergency crews were called to Highway 2A just south of Wetaskiwin around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a collision.

Wetaskiwin RCMP say a pick-up truck collided head-on with a small SUV. One of the vehicles burst into flames.

Responding officers and paramedics were able to rescue two people from the burning vehicle upon arrival.

Two others, a 61-year-old man from California and a 64-year-old woman from Wetaskiwin, were found dead at the scene.

All other occupants were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. It’s unclear how many people total were involved in the crash.

A portion of Highway 2A was closed for several hours for the investigation.

Anyone with additional information about the crash is being urged to call Wetaskiwin RCMP at 780-312-7267, or submit tips to CrimeStoppers anonymously.
