Students from the University of Alberta have another expense to worry about, as the U of A increases the monthly parking rates at the north campus.
On April 1, the U of A increased the monthly parking rate by 20 per cent, with a new rate ranging from $135 to $320 per month.
The students’ union is concerned with the changes, saying this will impact students already facing increasing tuition fees.
“When it comes to students, this is another thing that is making it really hard for students to afford education. We have seen the cost of tuition increase, we have seen the cost of housing increase and with the cost of parking increase by 20 per cent, we have heard from students that again they are struggling to afford it,” said Abdul Abbasi, the vice-president external of the University of Alberta’s Student Union.
The university says the decision was not made lightly, calling it necessary for the institution, stating in part: “Like many organizations, the University of Alberta is facing ongoing inflationary pressures and increasing costs. The university reviews parking rates annually including to help cover ongoing maintenance, necessary repairs, and capital improvements, including projects such as resurfacing structures, lighting and electrical upgrades, air exchange replacements, and drainage system improvements.”
The university stresses there are cheaper options, just not on the main campus, and requiring students and staff to take the LRT.
“That is welcome, but that doesn’t mean that you’re providing that opportunity for students to have cheaper parking on South Campus and you’re making it more expensive here. I think what is important is again, providing those opportunities here and at South Campus and wherever possible,” said Abbasi.
U of A added that financial assistance is available to provide support for students during their academic year.
