Inmate dies in custody at central Alberta prison

By Lauryn Heintz

An inmate serving time in a central-Alberta prison died over the weekend, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says.

The government agency says 69-year-old Gilbert Robinson died on Friday while in custody at the Bowden Institution, located along Highway 2 near Innisfail.

Gilbert was serving an indeterminate sentence at the time of his death.

He’d been in custody since April 5, 2018.

Various reports indicate Gilbert was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2014 death of his wife.

The man’s next of kin have been notified, according to CSC.

All cases involving the death of an inmate require a review by the CSC.

CSC policy also requires that the police and medical examiner be notified.
