‘Human activity’ started west Edmonton grass fire

A grass fire that sent big clouds of smoke into the west Edmonton air earlier this week and prompted the evacuation of several businesses is still burning – and authorities say they have a better idea of the cause.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services says Tuesday’s large wildland fire around 186 Street and 104 Avenue is the result of human activity in the treed area.

“The ignition source will remain undetermined,” Edmonton PIO told CityNews in an email.

As of late Thursday morning, the fire was still not called out, and crews remained at the scene.

While the fire did not threaten nearby structures, several businesses were evacuated.

That evacuation order was lifted Wednesday, and the roads around 111 Avenue between 184 Street and Anthony Henday were reopened.
