Police intercept 20 kg of meth being shipped from Winnipeg to Edmonton

Police in Alberta say the discovery of a large quantity of methamphetamine inside a vehicle earlier this month led to the search of two Edmonton homes, where weapons and more drugs were seized.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) says a shipment of 20 kilograms of meth from Winnipeg to Edmonton was intercepted near Wainwright – about 200 kilometres southeast of Alberta’s capital – on April 9.

Authorities, who say they were tipped off about the shipment, say the drugs were stashed inside a hidden compartment within the vehicle. They say the meth seized was valued at around $800,000.

ALERT says that seizure led to the search of two Edmonton homes, where another 20.5 kg of meth, three kilos of cocaine, 23 grams of fentanyl, a handgun, a shotgun, a vehicle, counterfeit money and $31,075 in cash were seized.

Two suspects were arrested. Charges have not been laid but they are expected to come, police say.

Police in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Edmonton helped with the investigation, which is ongoing.

“Organized crime doesn’t operate within the confines of borders,” said ALERT Insp. Angela Kemp in a news release. “It is a sophisticated enterprise that spans provinces and jurisdictions. We are grateful for the help from our policing partners in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to keep this large quantity of drugs from being circulated in Edmonton.”
