Cyclist fatally struck by semi-truck on highway northwest of Edmonton

Police say a cyclist was killed after being struck by a semi-truck on a highway northwest of Edmonton.

It’s believed to have happened overnight Monday.

Valleyview RCMP say the cyclist was travelling in the middle of a westbound lane on Highway 43 near Range Road 230, just west of Valleyview, Alta.

Authorities say the driver of the semi-truck did not see the cyclist “until it was too late.”

“Though the semi-truck attempted to avoid the cyclist, it was unable to do so,” RCMP said in a news release.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they are not currently looking to charge the truck driver.

Highway 43 westbound was closed to traffic but has since reopened.

Valleyview is about 350 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
