Edmonton police seek tips, witnesses after Emily Murphy Park statue theft

By News Staff

The Edmonton police are looking for tips and witnesses related to the Emily Murphy statue from the river valley park last month.

Det. Mona Gill with the EPS Investigative Response Team (IRT) said, “The statue was removed from the base using specialized cutting tools and, due to its weight, was likely moved out of the park using heavy-duty transport equipment.”

Last week, CityNews reported on how the bronze statue had been hacked off at the ankles leaving nothing but her shoes.

Police stated that they were notified of the theft by the City of Edmonton on Feb. 26, and the stand-alone plaque positioned next to the statue was noted missing by City staff on Feb. 19. Both the statue and plaque were last seen together and intact on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.

“We are hopeful that someone using the park after hours may have noticed this type of suspicious activity near the statue and can provide information that will assist with our investigation,” added Gill.

EPS is asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in or around the statue at Emily Murphy Park between Feb. 4 and Feb. 24 to contact the EPS.
