Coaches, parents, and players are all shocked and disappointed after finding out about $40k saved over two years to go to a special soccer tournament vanished. James Dunn has more.

A U11 Edmonton soccer team has had its trust shattered.

Selects FC raised over $50,000 for two and a half years all to go to one international tournament in Las Vegas this weekend. Then in the blink of an eye, it was gone.

“What did we miss, what red flags and I’m sure there were some,” said Lauren Scorgie, the head coach and team manager of Selects FC.

The team’s manager says money was taken from their account by a volunteer coach and they learned on Monday that nothing was booked.

“There was no registration for the tournament, that fee wasn’t paid, there was no hotel, and then I finally called Flair and there was no flight.”

CityNews has confirmed with Edmonton police that they are investigating a fraud-related complaint.

Scogie and other parents have been unable to get in touch with the volunteer coach tasked with the booking.

“He had been coaching for years so we didn’t think anything of it. He picked up my son to drive him to practice because it was right before a tournament and we didn’t want the kids to miss,” said Scorgie.

Players like Phil Johnston and Beckham Scorgie were supposed to be preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime tournament – now they are left wondering.

“I trusted him for three years,” said Johnston.

“Pretty disappointed. Sad,” said Beckham Scorgie. “We’ve trusted him for three years hoping we would actually go.”

The team is now turning to the community to get the money back. A fundraiser is underway while Edmonton police is investigating.
