Edmonton students relocated to nearby school due to frozen pipes

Students at a southeast Edmonton school have been relocated to another school after frozen pipes disabled the heating system.

All students at Waverley School were relocated to Hardisty School Monday – both part of the Edmonton Public School Board.

The EPSB says that decision was made “to ensure students are safe and warm, and to avoid learning interruptions while crews work in the school,” a spokesperson told CityNews in a statement.

“Hardisty School has space available to accommodate all students, is close to Waverley School and will be ready for students on Monday.”

The EPSB says Waverley School staff discovered frozen pipes had impacted the school’s heating system on Wednesday. Temporary heating measures are being used to help thaw the frozen plumbing. The division says that “could take several days.”

“Once the pipes thaw, Division Infrastructure staff will better be able to assess what repairs are necessary. Timelines for the repairs are currently unknown,” the EPSB spokesperson said.

The school board says Hardisty School will host Waverley students as part of a “school-within-a-school model.”
