An inmate who escaped from an Edmonton healing centre in January has been captured, according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

Inmate William Mackinaw escaped from the Stan Daniels Healing Centre on Jan. 4 and remained at large ever since.

Police say on Saturday night, Mackinaw – who was on Edmonton’s most wanted list – was apprehended by Red Deer RCMP.

The CSC and the Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA), which operates the Stan Daniels Healing Centre, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” the CSC said in a news release.

A warrant was issued for Mackinaw’s arrest Jan. 4 after he failed to report to work while on an authorized temporary absence.

Edmonton police say he is serving a 23-year sentence for multiple offences, including firearms related offences.
