Edmonton declares Phase 1 parking ban

The City of Edmonton declared a Phase 1 parking ban following a recent major snowfall. Laura Krause has details on how the city is responding, and where motorists can park.

The City of Edmonton has declared a city-wide parking ban following the recent snowfall seen around the city.

The city says the Phase 1 parking ban will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26 and is expected to last for 48 hours.

“We have experienced blowing and drifting of snow in addition to the significant accumulation in the last 24 hours, and a Phase 1 parking ban is necessary to ensure the major roadways are cleared and safe for all vehicles,” said Val Dacyk, General Supervisor of Infrastructure Field Operations, Parks and Roads Services.

“Keeping major roadways cleared of parked vehicles is essential for crews to clear roads. We anticipate the parking ban to remain in effect for three to five days.”

During the parking ban, city crews will work to clear arterial roads, collector roads, bus routes (roads marked with seasonal no parking signage) and roads within business improvement areas.

Due to this, parking will be prohibited along those roads, until they are clear. Once the roads have been cleared, parking can resume on them.

Vehicles that are parked on the listed roads may be ticketed and towed. If your vehicle does get towed, the city says to contact 311.

The city says parking is still allowed on residential streets during the parking ban.

Once Phase 1 is complete, the city might announce a Phase 2 parking ban, which would include residential and industrial parking.

Stephanie Greening with Accident Support Services International says as of 11 a.m. in Edmonton, there have been 82 collisions and 11 towed vehicles.

EPS adds that collisions can be reported at two Collision Reporting Centres (CRC). 15750 116 Ave NW or 5805 87A St NW.
