The City of Edmonton activated its extreme weather response Sunday to help its vulnerable population, while Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the city and parts of northern Alberta.
Edmonton is seeing the mercury drop significantly in the coming days. Sunday night will drop to -17 Celsius overnight, with that temperature carrying over into Monday.
The forecast for Monday overnight is -23 C, and -20 C for Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to warm up Wednesday before dropping again Thursday and Friday.
The city’s cold weather plan includes three bus routes that will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night to transport people to shelters with capacity.
Fifty temporary shelter spaces will open Monday night at the city-funded Al Rashid Mosque in north Edmonton. The Bissell Centre and Boyle Street Community Centre are extending their daytime hours of operation.
The extreme weather response is activated when temperatures will be colder than -20 C with wind chill for at least three consecutive nights.
The response is expected to last until March 1 at 9 a.m.
Meanwhile Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning, with 10-20 cm in the forecast for Sunday and Monday.
“Snow has begun for areas west of Edmonton and will spread eastward through the day,” the alert reads. “The heaviest snow will fall tonight. Some areas west of Edmonton may see locally higher snowfall totals of up to 25 cm. Snow will taper off through the day on Monday.”
