Funding available for residents, businesses west of Edmonton impacted by summer flooding

By News Staff

Residents and businesses from four communities that were hit hard by summer flooding – after months of fighting ravaging forest fires – can now access funding from the province.

Alberta announced $68 million in disaster recovery funding was available for residents of Edson, Whitecourt, Yellowhead County and Woodlands County.

For a week in mid to late June, those communities experienced severe flooding due to heavy rainfall.

Local states of emergency and evacuation orders were issued as roads were flooded and communications were down.

It was part of a tumultuous summer for Albertans dealing with natural disasters.

Municipalities were previously able to access funding.

As of Wednesday, residents and business owners could submit applications for financial help with uninsurable costs incurred during the flooding, such as damage to homes and other property, repair costs, food and transportation or cleanup costs.

It does not cover costs that could have been covered by insurance.

Residents and businesses have until Feb. 26 to submit their applications.
