Edmonton police used taser, non-lethal weapons before killing man in hotel: ASIRT

New information on the police-shooting death of a man inside a west Edmonton hotel last week.

Police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn on Stony Plain Road on August 24 for a man on the second floor of the hotel with a gun and acting erratically.

The police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — says officers found a man holding scissors in the hallway. For 30 minutes, police tried to negotiate with the suspect to drop the scissors, as the 57-year-old man allegedly told police to kill him.

All this as hotel guests were told to shelter in place.

ASIRT says a taser and other non-lethal weapons were used by EPS. The scissors were dropped during the exchange, but the police watchdog says the man picked them up again and advanced towards officers. Two officers fired their guns, hitting the suspect, who died on scene.

The investigation into the officers’ use of force remains ongoing.
