Alberta investing $16M to repair existing housing facilities

The Alberta government is investing new money into repairing and updating affordable housing within the province.

The province says $16 million will go to government-owned facilities that are currently not in use.

“We know the need for affordable housing continues to grow. Alberta’s government is committed to maintaining existing units while continuing to invest in new homes. By revitalizing outdated units, we are providing safe, stable homes for Albertans in need,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.

“Housing remains the highest priority for my department and amongst the highest priority for the Alberta government.”

The province is vowing to build 25,000 new homes in Alberta by 2031.

Nixon added building all the houses will take time, but notes the province is talking to its partners to try and find quicker solutions to be able to get housing faster.

Wednesday’s announcement follows talks that indicated there was a need to revamp the already existing housing facilities that were no longer being used.

The money will go to replacing windows, repairing roofs and improving the interior of the government-owned facilities.

“As an important part of Alberta’s affordable housing strategy, this injection of funding is vital to maintaining our current assets that strive to provide suitable living accommodations to Albertans. ASCHA and its members appreciate this investment and future investments that protect our current supply and look to increase the housing supply to meet the growing demand,” said Arlene Adamson, president, Alberta Seniors & Community Housing Association.

Nixon added the $16 million investment would add to the $94 million announced in the 2023 budget for renewable housing projects.
