Edmonton police say a woman accidentally drove into a bank on Gateway Boulevard Wednesday morning, injuring an employee.

The Edmonton Police Service says the Toyota Corolla crashed into the CIBC Branch on Gateway and 42 Avenue before 11:30 a.m.

The driver, a 62-year-old woman, was allegedly parking her vehicle in the disabled stall when she drove through a large office window, pinning an employee in the office who was sitting at his desk.

That man was treated and transported to hospital with what police say appear to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The situation caused confusion for onlookers and bank customers.

“I was just trying to walk into the bank to get a bank draft and the police officer just walked up to me and said, ‘no we can’t do any banking transactions for now. A car just crashed into the building and everyone is going home,’” recounted Abisola Jesumo.

The driver at the wheel of the Corolla is facing Traffic Safety Act charges.

“I see a car, a small vehicle right into the building and it looks like some damages have occurred,” said Jesumo.

The collision caused “extensive damage to the building,” police say.

But officers don’t believe speed, impairment or a medical episode were factors in the incident.
