The 190-acre Northeast River Valley Park is set to open to the public in less than three weeks.

The public park, which was initially meant to open last month but was delayed by the migratory bird nesting season, is opening Sept. 24.

“Preparations are now entering the final stages and the city is excited to welcome visitors later this month,” the City of Edmonton said in a news release.

The park along the North Saskatchewan River at 17 Street NE and 153 Avenue NE is roughly the size of 150 football fields.

Northeast River Valley Park will feature an ornamental lake, barn bridges, children’s playgrounds, and a large event centre for gatherings. It will connect with River Valley trails.

Activities are planned for the Sept. 24 opening day, including an open house, story walk, nature activities, tradeshow with giveaways and food trucks.

The city acquired the land May 15 “but did not open immediately to the public in order for staff and crews to perform proper inspections, maintenance work and prepare the facilities and grounds for public use.”

An official name for the park will follow a concept-planning process that is expected to begin this fall; residents are invited to take part in public engagement opportunities for their input.
