Edmonton police say two people are facing dozens of charges after a shooting spree throughout the city Saturday night that resulted in three victims being injured.
The Edmonton Police Service says a man and a woman randomly shot at multiple people in their vehicles in a 35-minute span.
Two victims were hospitalized with serious, non-life-threatening injuries while a third sustained minor injuries.
Police say the suspects were apprehended in Devon late Saturday night. They are collectively facing 37 charges, including aggravated assault and firearm-related offences. The driver is also facing additional driving offences.
“These two individuals put several lives at risk, and we are glad we were able to intercept their senseless crime spree,” Staff Sgt. Shelley Fisher said in a news release.
“Our investigation does not reveal any connection between the suspects or any of the victims who were simply travelling through the city and targeted in these random acts of violence. This is incredibly concerning.”
95 Avenue and 149 Street
The EPS says it began shortly after 9 p.m. with officers responding to the area of 95 Avenue and 149 Street in relation to a weapons complaint. Police were told a suspect in a grey vehicle shot a man in his vehicle while stopped at the intersection.
Investigators say they found bullet holes in the passenger door side of the vehicle. The man was not injured.
142 Street and 89A Avenue
Police say around 9:15 p.m. officers received another weapons complaint a few blocks away – at 142 Street and 89A Avenue. A man in a silver vehicle reportedly shot at a woman’s vehicle before speeding off.
Investigators found bullets in the side of the woman’s vehicle. She sustained minor injuries.
107 Street and 82 Avenue
Shortly before 9:30 p.m., police received a report of a shooting at 107 Street and 82 Avenue. Two suspects in a grey Audi reportedly shot at a man and a woman who were driving on Whyte Avenue.
The two victims were struck by bullets and sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries, police say. Both victims were recovering in hospital Sunday afternoon.
82 Avenue and 77 Street
Around 9:35 p.m., police received a weapons complaint at 82 Avenue and 77 Street. Officers were told a grey Audi approached a vehicle and shot at a man, who was not injured. The suspect vehicle sped off following the shooting, according to EPS.
“Investigative resources city-wide quickly pulled together to corroborate witness statements and the reported grey suspect vehicle was determined to be a grey Audi A4,” police said in the news release. “All officers were put on notice and were actively seeking the whereabouts of this vehicle.”
At 11:15 p.m., patrol officers observed the suspect vehicle going southbound on 50 Street and Ellerslie Road. The vehicle fled police, who followed it into Beaumont. Police say it was “driving erratically, travelling at a high rate of speed, and veering into oncoming traffic.”
Police continued to pursue the vehicle into Devon “due to the dangerous driving patterns and evidence of a firearm in the vehicle.”
Edmonton police say specialized units were deployed to arrest the two suspects, who were taken into custody off Highway 60 and Miquelon Avenue. The suspects were treated and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspects are a 31-year-old man, who was driving, and a 28-year-old woman, who was the passenger, according to police. A firearm was seized and investigators are working to determine if the vehicle is stolen.
