Lake Louise Ski Resort reopens after housing complex fire

Lake Louise Ski Resort reopened Monday after its staff housing complex, Charleston Residence, was engulfed in flames.

The incident happened on July 3 around noon, when Mounties were called to the area alongside firefighters for both the building burning and for a man on the rooftop.

When emergency officials arrived, they spotted 40-year-old Timothy Alexander Peterson holding a weapon but didn’t clarify what the weapon was.

Officers say they de-escalated the situation and convinced the suspect to meet them on a ladder, and once he was down, they arrested him.

The building suffered “significant devastation,” which left those affected without belongings and identification.

While all 173 residents were displaced, the resort said on its website they are all safe and without injuries. Meanwhile, the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries after he fell off a ladder.

“Swift action led to financial aid, short-term accommodations, meals, transportation, counselling services, and assistance with document replacement for those affected,” the resort said.

“As we continue these efforts, our focus is on securing mid to long-term housing solutions.”
