Fatal single-vehicle collision on 120 Avenue: Edmonton police

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) are investigating a fatal single-vehicle collision involving a stolen vehicle Thursday morning.
EPS initially asked drivers to avoid 120 Avenue between 86 Street and 88 Street due to the collision, but an update just before noon confirmed the collision happened near 89 Street.
Around 5:30 a.m., officers received a report that a 2010 Toyota RAV4 had been stolen from a garage near 125 Avenue and 81 Street by two male suspects.
Through initial stages of the investigation, the owner of the RAV4 spotted his RAV4 drive by a nearby convenience store that he was in at the time of the theft.
After seeing the RAV4, the owner pursued the two suspects from a distance in a secondary vehicle, while speaking with 911 Emergency Operators.
A short time later, the stolen vehicle reportedly lost control and hit a tree.

“We heard a very big, loud, um, crash. And then we heard squeals, like, from the tires. And I was like, Did I just hear that?” said Trina and Vanessa, nearby residents woken by the crash.
“We just told them to keep still. And because we didn’t want them to move around just because we don’t, it was pretty serious.”
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and EMS were called to the scene and confirmed the driver at the time, a 27-year-old man, had been killed.
EMS transported the second suspect, a 34-year-old man, to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say at this time, speed is considered to be a major factor in the collision.
“There is nothing left of it. I think that’s a scary thought for someone to lose their life so early in the morning and for all our neighbors to witness that,” said Roxanne Hooper, lives up the street from the crash.
EPS has also reopened 120 Avenue between 86 and 88 streets.
