Maskawics man shot by Alberta RCMP dies

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says the Maskawics man that was shot by RCMP on a First Nation on Thursday has died.

Officers say the 27-year-old man was transported to hospital in critical condition following the confrontational incident on Samson Cree Nation and died Saturday.

RCMP say it happened in Maskwacis, south of Wetaskiwin, at around 1:30 p.m. when they were called about a man shooting a gun in a rural area on the First Nation.

When police arrived at around 2 p.m., one of them spotted the man holding a rifle and walking down a rural road near Range Road 250 and Township Road 442.

The police watchdog says the man stopped as an officer approached him with his gun drawn. The man then pointed his rifle in the officer’s direction, which the officer responded to by shooting the man.

They are examining the “use of force” and are not going to release any additional information.

ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events and or may have a video to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
