Restrictions on single-use plastic coming to Edmonton in 2023

By News Staff

Single-use plastic is gradually on its way out in Edmonton.

City council approved a new single-use item reduction bylaw. It will go into effect next year.

Grocery stores will no longer carry plastic bags. Instead, paper bags will be available for a minimum of $0.15. Reusable bags will be sold for at least $1.

Say goodbye to Styrofoam and say hello to reusable cups, as restaurants will be required to accept them from customers.

Straws, forks and other cutlery will still be around, but only upon request or self-serve.

The city estimates Edmontonians throw out 1.2 million single-use plastic items per day.
