Province launches new wildfire and fire permit apps

Wildfire monitoring has become easier for Albertans.

The Alberta Government has launched two new apps in conjunction with the Alberta Wildfire app, to help Albertans track and monitor wildfires and be able to obtain fire permits easier.

“Albertans want to be in the know during wildfire season and do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires. Last year, 67 per cent of wildfires were caused by humans. These new tools will empower residents and visitors with the information they need to make smart decisions during wildfire season,” said Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development in a statement.

The wildfire dashboard will provide up-to-date wildfire information with interactive displays and statistics.

The second app launched by the province will allow Albertans living in the Forest Protection Area of the province to request a free fire permit.

The province says, “permits are required for burning activities other than campfires during wildfire season and help focus firefighting resources where they are needed most. Fire permits help ensure that when smoke or fire is reported, wildfire officials can determine whether this is a wildfire or a permitted burn.”

Fire permits are all unique and outline specific conditions that must be followed for each use. The province is also able to cancel or suspend all permits if forest fires risks become a concern.

The new fire permit app will not apply to those living within a city, and anyone looking for a permit should contact their city for more information.
