Pedestrian fatally struck in southeast Edmonton was crossing against the light, police say

Police say a 69-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in southeast Edmonton early Thursday morning.

The Edmonton Police Service believes the pedestrian was crossing 23 Avenue at 50 Street, using a crosswalk, against the light when she was hit by an SUV.

It happened around 12:10 a.m.

The 17-year-old boy behind the wheel of the SUV remained on scene. Three other passengers were in the vehicle, police say.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the collision.

The EPS major collision investigations section (MCIS) is investigating, with authorities seeking witnesses and dashcam footage.
