CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A Calgary man who makes YouTube videos of him barbequing got a little something extra in his jar of pickles this week, and he may not be the only one.
Steve Gow, the host of Smoke Trails BBQ on YouTube, was doing some prep work for one of his videos about three days ago when he noticed something off about the pickles he was going to use.
“I saw these little stringy, little weird things, that looked like large pickle seeds,” said Gow. “Then, I realized that they were actually maggots.”
Immediately, Gow called the Superstore where he purchased the pickles to let them know of his discovery.
“I talked to the manager and let her know that there were maggots in my pickles, and she informed me that they were going to notify the vendor and there would probably be a recall,” he said.
He also took to Twitter to warn other pickle lovers.

It turns out he wasn’t the only one.
Someone sent us an anonymous DM with a heads up to always check your pickle. They said they picked up some baby dill no-name brand from @RealCdnSS Mcld/Southland (exp Oct/22) and maggots were also in there. They tossed them out, wanted to caution others. #yyc pic.twitter.com/qUKcOoKUkS

During an interview with CityNews, Gow sliced into the rest of the pickles, luckily there were no more maggots to be found, which was good news for Gow and his parents.
“I ate a bunch of these before I realized,” he said.
Now, Gow just wants to send a warning to those who may have some pickles they recently picked up.
“Cut into your pickles for the next few months until you eat them, don’t go chomping down on full pickles because you might get a mouthful of something awful.”
CityNews reached out to Loblaw in regards to the troubling find, in which they responded:
“Our customer care team has spoken with the customers to get further details and our Quality Assurance team is actively working with the vendor to implement preventative and corrective measures to minimize the risk of this happening again. At this stage in the investigation it is safe to say that there is no food safety issue with the pickles.
We would like to extend a sincere apology to the customer and look forward to resolving this matter to their satisfaction.”
