WestJet to suspend service to Medicine Hat, three other cities

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – WestJet is temporarily suspending service in four Canadian cities including two destinations in Alberta.

The Calgary-based airline announced it will suspend flights to Medicine Hat, Lloydminster, St. John’s and London, Ont as of Mar. 19.

The suspensions are expected to last until June 24, 2021.

The routes are the direct flights from Calgary to Medicine Hat and Calgary to Lloydminster along with Toronto to London and Halifax to St. John’s.

“We have continued to operate in the face of uncertainty as domestic and international travel restrictions and quarantines have caused demand to plummet,” said WestJet President Ed Sims. “Unfortunately, with new and increasingly restrictive policies, we are left once again, with no other option than to suspend service to these communities.”

Last month WestJet announced further cuts to service resulting in 1,000 layoffs and a reduction of its domestic flights by 160 departures.

Those moves came after the company cut service to four Atlantic cities last October.

As a result of the pandemic and government restrictions on flights, over 4,000 WestJet employees have been laid off.

WestJet said it is working with Pacific Coastal Airlines for the affected flights in Lloydminster and Medicine Hat and will also work with new third-party service providers for St. John’s and London.
