Calgary man charged in largest meth seizure at border crossing

LETHBRIDGE – The Canada Border Services Agency has made its largest meth seizure in southern Alberta.
The CBSA and RCMP made the seizure and arrest at the Coutts border crossing southeast of Lethbridge on July 28.
Officers searched a vehicle and found 33 bags of meth weighing approximately 50 kg.
The 40-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested and, along with the drugs, was turned over to the RCMP.
“The success of this investigation is an excellent example of the strong working relationship between the RCMP and CBSA. Working together, sharing intelligence, resources and expertise, we disrupt international drug trafficking networks and keep our communities safe,” said Inspector Charlene O’Neill.
The CBSA at Coutts seized a record amount of cocaine in December 2017, when officers intercepted 99.5 kg cocaine and 21 kg cocaine in separate incidents.
Asif Mir of Calgary has now been charged on two counts under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act including importation of a controlled substance and possession for trafficking.
Calgary police say crystal meth charges made up more than one-third of all of drug offences recorded in the city in 2018.
