Alberta government looking into rules for electric dirt bikes

The Alberta government is eyeing new rules for electric dirt bikes in the province.
This comes after two boys on a dirt bike were injured in a crash with a sedan Thursday near Windermere Boulevard and Terwillegar Drive in Edmonton.
The 11-year-old driving the dirt bike and his 12-year-old passenger were both sent to hospital.
Premier Danielle Smith, speaking on her radio show “Your Province, Your Premier” on Saturday, voiced concerns about young people using these bikes sometimes without any protective gear.
Smith says new technologies – these being electric bikes – are outpacing current regulations, adding she raised the issue with the transportation minister a few days ago, and that recommendations are expected to come forward to the legislature.
The premier says she’s mulling if they need to keep motorized bikes separated from other bikes or pedestrians.
“We’ve identified that this is a very serious area that is needing some regulation,” Smith said on her radio show. “Do we ban them? I think we probably could set some speed limits. We could probably set some limits on where they’re able to go. We probably need to set some limits on age, if you’re going to be using them, and what kind of protective gear that would be.
“But those are the kind of things we’re consulting on right now.”
The province is asking the public for feedback as they work on the issue, with Smith saying she wants to see consistent rules across municipalities.
