Accidents by the dozen as freezing rain strikes two Prairie provinces

EDMONTON – Driving became a nightmare overnight when freezing rain struck many areas of southern Saskatchewan as well as central and northern regions of Alberta.

Accidents, jackknifed semi-trailers and vehicles in ditches were in abundance in Saskatchewan, where parts of the Trans-Canada Highway were closed for a time east and west of Regina.

The RCMP was asking drivers to stay off the roads and a number of school divisions took the advice, cancelling multiple school bus routes for the day.

A freezing rain advisory was issued by Environment Canada around midnight but was lifted about six hours later.

Police were kept busy in Edmonton hopping from accident to accident, including one on the south side involving five vehicles and another one where two semis tangled, leaving one on its side.

City officials say they had 80 pieces of equipment on the roads overnight to try to make travel conditions safer.
