Grocery stores pull romaine lettuce from shelves

STELLARTON – A major grocery chain is pulling romaine lettuce from its Canadian stores, in response to a public health warning about possible E. Coli contamination.
On Tuesday night, November 20, out of concern for the health of employees and customers, Sobeys Inc. temporarily stopped the sale of all Romaine lettuce products across its national store network until further notice.
All items containing romaine lettuce in Sobeys’ national store network – over 300 products – are being removed from shelves at Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Thrifty Foods, Foodland, FreshCo and Lawton’s Drug Stores as well as all Sobeys Inc. convenience store banners in all provinces.
Loblaws Canada also announced they would be pulling romaine lettuce products until further notice.
To date, there have been 18 confirmed cases of E. coli O157 illness under investigation with 3 in Ontario and 15 in Quebec. Six individuals have been hospitalized after becoming sick.
In the United States, 32 people have become sick with E Coli, with 13 sent to hospital, as the outbreak has hit 11 states.
