Edmonton man convicted of manslaughter sentenced to 9.5 years in 2022 fatal shooting

A man with a long criminal record was sentenced Monday for manslaughter at the Edmonton courthouse.
Martin Dubitski was convicted for his role in a man’s death inside an apartment in north central Edmonton four years ago. The victim was killed in a dispute about a vehicle.
A judge sentenced Dubitski to nine-and-a-half years. Initially charged with second-degree murder, Dubitski pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on the seventh day of his trial.
Dubitski is one of two men charged in the fatal shooting of Edmonton father Kyle Syryda in December 2022 in an apartment building in the Westwood neighbourhood.
The court heard while Dubitski and another person both brought guns and tried to hide them afterwards, it’s unclear who pulled the trigger.
Dubitski sat in court Monday wearing a black hoodie with red and white letters.
The Crown prosecutor said Dubitski and a second person forced their way into the victim’s home with firearms and surrounded him. Their goal was to force the victim to sign over ownership of a Camaro.
Dubitski told the judge, “The system failed me.” The judge pushed back, saying people have failed him, but he has to take some responsibility. Dubitski said he does take responsibility.
The Crown wanted a 14-year sentence given the man’s lengthy criminal history. He has 39 convictions, including accessory to murder in the 2021 double homicide of Deidra Aldridge and Daniel Grandbois in Edmonton’s McKernan neighbourhood.
Dubitski was also banned from having firearms at the time.
His defence lawyer says he’s shown remorse, including by pleading guilty to manslaughter during the trial, which spoke of Dubitski’s horrific upbringing.
The second person charged in Syryda’s death has yet to face trial.
