19-year-old charged with smashing glass at Edmonton’s 100 Street Funicular, LRT stations

Police say a 19-year-old man has been charged in a series of vandalism incidents that did approximately $100,000 in damage across central Edmonton earlier this month.
The Edmonton Police Service alleges the man is responsible for smashing the glass panels at the 100 Street Funicular, as well as glass and windows at the MacEwan LRT Station, Central LRT Station and ATB Place.
The acts of vandalism took place between Aug. 19-25, police say.

Edmonton police say a suspect’s identity was confirmed through CCTV footage and “other investigative efforts.” They say he was known to police.
On Aug. 26, officers arrested Chavez Adam Phillip Coyote with help from Edmonton Transit peace officers. He has been charged with seven counts of mischief over $5,000.
He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
A City of Edmonton spokesperson told CityNews last week the funicular is seeing an increase in vandalism-related costs and that the city is “investigating alternative options to glass that may be more durable and help reduce future repair costs.”
Earlier this year, the city estimated vandalism-related repairs to the funicular cost between $40,000 and $70,000 each year.
The 100 Street Funicular opened in late 2017 and provides access between downtown Edmonton and the river valley.
