Edmonton Valley Zoo’s Nocturnal Wing reopening on Saturday

The 92 Jamaican Fruit Bats in Edmonton Valley Zoo got a new look to their home. Leo Cruzat has more on what’s new.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo says its Nocturnal Wing will be reopening on Saturday, July 4.

The Nocturnal Wing was closed to undergo habitat enhancements and facility upgrades designed to support animal wellbeing while enhancing the visitor experience.

Upon its reopening, visitors to the zoo will be able to see a colony of more than 90 Jamaican fruit bats.

The bat colony arrived from the Vancouver Aquarium in 2009, and through conservation partnerships, research support and public education, the zoo is helping to raise awareness regarding the importance of bats in the ecosystem.

The new habitat includes a new themed rock wall to support natural perching behaviours, environmental enrichment features and specialized red lighting that improves visibility for visitors while minimizing impacts on bat behaviour and health.

“We’re excited to reopen the Nocturnal Wing and welcome visitors back to this unique space,” said Gary Dewar, Director, Edmonton Valley Zoo. “The improvements support the wellbeing of our bats while creating new opportunities for visitors to learn about these important animals and the role they play in healthy ecosystems. We hope the experience encourages people to learn more about bats and the conservation challenges they face.”

Additionally, the public viewing area has also been updated with various new features, including new paint, interpretive signage and enhanced viewing windows.
