Storm causes flooding, road closures and facility damage across Edmonton

A powerful storm that swept through Edmonton on Friday evening caused localized flooding, road closures and damage to several city facilities.
The storm, which struck around 8 p.m., brought heavy rain and strong winds, resulting in downed trees, damaged traffic signal poles and flooding at recreation centres and other public buildings.
Several roads were affected, including the Yellowhead Trail under the CN overpass at 82 Street, which remained closed Saturday as crews worked to clear floodwater. A Whitemud Drive off-ramp between 170 Street and 178 Street also remained closed because of roadway damage, while lane closures were in place on 111 Avenue near 158 Street and 118 Avenue near 149 Street.
The City of Edmonton said crews and EPCOR workers were continuing to clear debris, assess damage and restore affected areas, urging motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to use caution.
Several city facilities were also impacted. Telus World of Science, the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre and the Heritage Amphitheatre remained closed Saturday, while the Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre’s main pool was closed because of flooding. Commonwealth Recreation Centre reopened after temporarily closing Friday evening.
The city also reported broken LRT crossing arms, flooded pathways and localized flooding at active construction sites. Residents are encouraged to check for facility updates and report storm-related damage to public property through 311.
