Man wanted on Canada-wide warrant following carjacking taken into custody

Alberta RCMP say 34-year-old David Nelson St. Cyr, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, has been taken into custody.

Mounties say the warrant was issued after the suspect in the armed carjacking of a taxi in Edmonton last week, whose presence in St. Albert prompted a shelter-in-place order.

Mounties say around 10:30 a.m. on May 13, officers spotted Cyr, and reportedly set up a containment with surrounding businesses evacuated for precautionary reasons to ensure public safety, before taking him into custody just before 2 p.m.

Cyr is facing several charges, including breaking and entering a residence, theft of a motor vehicle, and obstructing a peace officer.

During the initial incident, it is alleged that a man stole a taxi near 151 Street and 111 Avenue on Sunday around 1:45 p.m., and that taxi was later spotted in St. Albert.

“The area in which the suspect was last seen on foot was contained and thoroughly searched,” St. Albert RCMP said in an update on Thursday.

When Mounties first issued the order, they urged residents to remain inside their homes and avoid opening the door for anyone while officers conducted the search.

“We understand how situations such as this can make a community feel uneasy, but rest assured, your Alberta RCMP continues to work vigilantly to ensure the safety of everyone in our communities,” the RCMP said.

The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
