Edmonton residents can expect new rules for tossing their Christmas trees this year.
Curbside collection is being scrapped, and instead residents are being asked to bring their trees to designated spots.
Beginning Dec. 27, residents can bring their natural Christmas trees, free of charge, to any community recycling depot, Eco Station, or the Edmonton waste management centre. The drop-off program will run through Feb. 7.
City officials say the shift will help redirect funding money towards other programs while holding prices steady on utilities. Although only 6,400 households — about 2.5 per cent of those with curbside collection — set out a tree after the holidays last year, collection trucks still had to drive past all 280,000 homes to ensure none were missed.
The result was an expensive service used by very few. Based on last year’s operating budget, the City of Edmonton spent $120,000 on curbside Christmas tree collection, roughly $18.75 per participating household.
Before dropping off their tree, residents are asked to remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel and decorations. Artificial trees and holiday decor in good condition can be donated to the Reuse Centre, while broken lights and electronics can be taken to any Eco Station for safe disposal.
