Albertans will be paying more to fill up their tanks come April 1.

Ottawa will increase the federal carbon tax at the beginning of next month, sparking a charge of 17 cents per litre on gasoline and 21 cents per litre on diesel.

Natural gas will also see a higher cost, with a charge of 15 cents per cubic metre.

At the same time, the Alberta government is also bringing back the 13 cent per litre gas tax.

Minister of Finance Nate Horner said in January there would be a partial reintroduction of the tax of nine cents per litre, after it was paused as an affordability measure.

The amount of tax charged on gas is now tied to the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil.

Franco Terrazzano with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has called on MPs to cancel the carbon tax hike, saying people need relief from the high cost of living.

Federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre even threatened a motion of no-confidence on the matter.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has repeatedly said that eligible Canadians receive more back in rebates than they pay in carbon tax at the pump or on natural gas.
