Fatal U-Haul hit-and-run: police release new photos of suspect

Alberta RCMP released higher-quality photos Tuesday afternoon of the suspect who allegedly fatally struck a Fort Saskatchewan mother while fleeing police in a U-Haul truck.

The suspect is being described as five-foot-11 with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie with white text on the front, brown shorts and black shoes.

Police initially released surveillance footage stills of the suspect but have since provided images with better resolution.

The U-Haul truck was fleeing police from Beaumont to Edmonton on Saturday when it allegedly struck and killed Kassandra Gartner, a mother who worked at the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank.

After the U-Haul was disabled by police spikes – coming to a stop outside a gas station and 7-Eleven at 50 Street and 22 Avenue SW – the suspect stole a Honda Civic with a child inside, according to police.

The child was found unharmed shortly after, police say, and the Civic was later recovered.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to contact the Beaumont RCMP at 780-929-7400 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers (1‐800‐222‐8477).
