Mural honouring late Edmonton Oilers player Colby Cave unveiled at CASA Centre

A new mural at Edmonton’s CASA Centre is paying tribute to late Oilers player Colby Cave.
Cave was just 26 years old when he died unexpectedly in April 2020 after suffering from a colloid cyst.
The 8×6-foot mural, painted by Edmonton-based artist Rahmaan Hameed, features Cave in an Oilers jersey beside his Boston Bruins jersey.
It also includes a reference to the “Colby’s Kids” program, and a puck with the number 18 on it – a nod to Bruins player Danton Heinen, who donated $18,000 to Colby’s Kids.
The inspirational quote included on the mural was one of Cave’s mottos: “Be somebody that makes everybody feel like a somebody.”

Cave’s wife Emily and CASA Mental Health commissioned the mural in November 2023.
“When I think about this mural and friendship, I think about CASA and all the amazing work that they are doing here for so many children,” Emily said in a news release. “Friendship and giving back is about establishing support, love and encouragement during a difficult time so that no one feels alone — that is why it is an honour to have this mural and story of friendship here at CASA.”
CASA says the funding it received from Colby’s Kids helps children get timely mental-health care.
“Every child who enters treatment is welcomed with a Colby’s Kids backpack and notebook,” CASA CEO Bonnie Blakley said. “Colby was a strong mental-health advocate, and the mural is a beautiful tribute to his legacy.”
